The Burghers of Calais tells the story of the siege of Calais in 1347, during the Hundred Years War. Surrounded for a year by English soldiers under King Edward III, six leading citizens of Calais, the Burghers, offered to die if Edward spared the rest of the town's people.

Information on Jacques de Wissant is elusive, which is possibly why his pictorial backstory, in the form of comic book panels, is more detailed than the others, plus more other-worldly. I was trying to make something up for poor Jacques. His brother Pierre was also in the group of six
